Outside the Hospital

This page is a guide to some of the places to get your essentials - that is supplies and food.  Sorry ladies, its not a guide to fashion shopping in this area of Moscow!

There are 6 locations that we used and that I would recommend as they covered all of our needs.  At the bottom of the page is a location map to assist you in finding them.  Use the reference numbers on the map to match the descriptions below.

Location 1 - Supermarket, Coffee and Cake shops
About a 10 min walk from the Hospital Gate, you will find a small complex.  Inside is a larger supermarket, cake shop and a coffee shop/pizzeria.

Entry to the Supermarket complex - Location 1
We found everything we needed here, the quality was good, and this ended up being our regular place to stock up. A tip for buying fruit and veg - it needs to be weighed and tagged (with a sticker) by the staff before you get to the checkout.  Bag your item and hand it to an assistant near the scales at the fruit and veg section.

The toiletry items were actually upstairs in another shop.  The supermarket only carried a small selection.

Also when checking out, some supermarket charge for bags, so they will ask you if you want a bag.  I used a combination of charades, fingers and smiles to get through.

The coffee shop is also a pizzeria - they roll the dough fresh in front of you.  We had the peperoni more than once.  "Subway" seems to be the universal word for takeaway.  Very friendly owner.  The pizzas took about 20 mins.

The cake shop here is fantastic.  On occasion we would take a cake in for the hospital staff or for the birthdays.

Location 2 - Small Convenience Store
Location 2 - was being painted
Almost every block has a small supermarket or convenience store in it.  The reason for highlighting this one is that it is almost directly opposite the Hospital gates, making it about a minute to get there - super convenient.

It is very, very small - but it is close by.

Location 3 - Restaurant
Tucked away on the opposite side from the main road is a small restaurant that does takeaway meals - about a 5 minute walk.  On the wall of the entrance was a sign advertising different types of burger meals.  I'm not convinced they stock all these, because on the day we visited we could only order a chicken burger.

The burgers were homemade, perhaps a little basic, but the chips/fries were very good.  The staff were very friendly.  it did take about 30 mins for our order, but they do have a bar!

Location 4
Menu was only is Russian and no English was spoken.  We used translation apps on our phones, and charades to order.

Location 4 - Supermarket
Another supermarket, but this one is directly opposite the tram stop when to hop off, making it slightly more convenient.

Not quite as large a shop as the one above, and it the aisles were more tightly packed giving it the feel of a budget supermarket.  We didn't compare prices, so that may not be the case.

Location 5 - Hamburger Restaurant
Location 5
A little further down the main road (about a 10 minute walk) was an American style Hamburger Restaurant (budget McDonalds?).  It was nice and clean inside.  Friendly staff, and the menu was numbered making it easier to order.

The order was fairly quick, around 10 mins.  The burgers were OK, the chips/fries were not so good - edible, but a little dry.

Location 6 - Sushi & Everything Else Restaurant
Saving the best restaurant until last!  Special mention to Bjorn for putting us onto this one.

Location 6
Superb restaurant, about a 15 min walk.  They had a couple of English speaking staff, and although the menu is in Russian there are pictures of everything.  The menu was very extensive - lots of sushi and Japanese, but also a full range of Pizzas, burgers, etc..  Quality was great.  The place was a joy to sit in, very comfortable.
They do takeaway and delivery (to the hospital gates!). I believe they even have an app for your phone!

The ordering and serving processes may be slower than you are used to, and meals may not always arrive together.  Our experience was that was common across many restaurants we visited.
